I was a prop of no great accomplishment in rugby union and rugby league back in the day. I loved the opportunity to get the ball in my hands more often in league but the scrums weren't worth having. No one pushed, there was no physical contest. They were pathetic. I always preferred union but if they continue to take the scrum out of the game they'll make it identical to league. The only real difference will be the lineout. Maybe they'll get rid of that too.

100% correct. The most democratic sport on earth..all shapes and sizes have their "moment to shine" .guys that are props can not contribute so much in any other sport...a winger can do nothing for 79 minutes and change the game in 1 moment... If grassroots changes then the popularity suffers... In 1995, Jona Lomuh was a freak...now most 12s and 13s are close in size and ability... In what sport could Cheslin Kolbe and Bundi Aki play adjacent positons?😂 Not many kids have posters of Ox Nche or Joe Marler on their walls...(do kids do that anymore?) Compared to Cheslin Kolbe or Antoine duPont... but the big lads can participate and contribute and be part of a team... I was a big lad..82kg at 16 in the 80s was big...prop or sometime lock was all I was ever going to be....plus I wore glasses off the pitch...contacts weren't a thing yet...no other sport offered me that opportunity to excel......and through that grow as a person... it changed my life and allowed me to succeed at a physical pursuit.. I love cricket, but had to become an umpire at 14..I just could not contribute on the field.....rugby allowed me to be in a team on a sports field...that changes you forever....in a good way.. I might only have played 2nd team in highschool, but I did so at Paul Rood Gymansuum in Stellenbosch....the school with the most Springboks... at 55 years old, it still means something today and that I can mention out at a function !!! I could not have done that in any other sport.. Very dangerous to mess with essence of the game....and I am not one of those rabid Bok fans...so am not coming from that angle.. It will affect fans and revenues in decades to come.. The reality is that teams will all look for different things to to gain ascendancy......if one dominates at scrums others will find ways to.dominate at other things..these things even out...look at how the All Blacks domination was ended...they used to unbeatable...now people belive they can....same will happen to the Boks... and the cycle will continue

For me the problem with scums is the 6 minutes of playing time trickling away for a scrum that turns into another scrum then another and before you know it the game is over! I think an easy fix for this, is the TMO or even the ref, pauses the clock. Easy fix! No need to change rules, just pause the clock, and resume it when the scrum is set. At any other time following any other No 7 than Richie M, Sam Cane would have been viewed as a true great. Despite all his bad luck both of timing and terrible injuries he maintained single minded determination, class and sheer energy for that All Black shirt. A truly classy man.

Thank for your awesome post . And yes we as South Africans do get emotional about this series. We live ,breeth and eat rugby. That emptyness at the end of sesdion 4 was so real that i just sat there for a while,trying to take all this in. Maybe Rassie is giving to much away of the meta of the Boks. But i think Rassie will find new and exiting metas going into 2027.Maybe wr will chans the laws again then. Sad about world rugby dos not see scrums as exiting rugby. Scrums is rugby. Ardie on the field is an absolute beast. Off the field, such a pleasant bloke - and that goes for so many rugby players. But I worry that giving Ardie the task of captain might hinder his playing abilities, too many off-the-ball responsibilities to worry about. But I hope I'm wrong, because he's such an All Black! So, my guesses for skipper - needs more thought.

Totally agree concerning the scrum - its disgusting, Rugby & the Scrum go hand in hand. If you watch Bill Beaumont's expression handing out the gold medals in 2019 & 2023 this change makes a lot of sense..... STOP the 3 peat! Honestly, my bet is Rassie will adapt as their advantage is more than the game of rugby! The big lost is the game of rugby where comparisons of past & present will be lost!

The scrum has never been the same since crooked feeds became the norm. The line outs are next - not straight will not apply if the ball is not challenged for. Why bother to have 16 men form a scrum, just have a tapped restart. WR hate both scrums and line outs. Why??

As a South African i believe this rule change is a targeted at our style of play! Fortunately our team is not a one trick pony! We will thrive under any circumstance!

Should we not be bringing in a repeated infringement situation to the scrums with this rule? Going from from a caution to yellow card? How many chances should a team get? Also, if a player is suspected of 'throwing' a scrum then is that not foul play and cynical which results in a straight yellow card?

World Rugby can't take the fact that SA has won 2 world cups in a row. Whenever SA is successful with something, they always look for strategies to hold them back. Suddenly safety becomes an issue and it's all for the good of the game. Trust that if SA had lost the WC, there would be no new rules and they'd be say how great scrums are 😂

OMG scrums suck, what part of no crown attendance are you missing 🤪 Rugby in NZ is dying. Kiwis just don't care for rugby as once upon a time. Not sure whats happening elsewhere in the world, but yawn zzzzzzzz to a game i once loved. Everyone has switched to NRL even in Canterbury (the most die hard fans in NZ) people are no watching league at pubs
